Behind the South Carolina State House is an equestrian statue of Wade Hampton III(1818-1902), one of South Carolina’s great political and military leaders. Hampton served as a member of the General Assembly (both House and Senate) , as a general in the Confederate Army, and finally, as Governor and as a US Senator.
